OPWDD (The Office for People With Developmental Disabilities)
The Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) provides a wide range of services for individuals with special needs, such as intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and autism spectrum disorders. One of their standout programs is Self-Direction, which empowers individuals and families to take control of their services and
budgets. Through Self-Direction, families can hire their own staff, choose community classes, and tailor services to meet their specific needs, all within an assigned budget. OPWDD also offers community habilitation (Com Hab) workers who visit families to teach children, teenagers, and adults with special needs how to be more independent and adapt
to the community. Additionally, respite workers provide essential support by caring for children while families are at work or need a break. They can also accompany children to community classes or arrange these activities at home if needed. OPWDD’s comprehensive support aims to enhance independence and quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities. Life Care Services consults and guides families on how to apply for OPWDD programs. For more details, please call 646-732-0721.
